On November 4th, the San Diego Rescue Mission organized their annual procession and candlelight vigil for “Those Who Died Homeless and Alone on the Streets of San Diego.”

As the San Diego Union-Tribune reports, 63 homeless men and women have died in the past year, some of whom were unidentified. These persons were represented by 63 pairs of shoes carried by the mourners, joining over 800 individuals commemorated since the march began thirteen years ago.

After the procession reached the County Administration Building, Interim Mayor Todd Gloria proclaimed November 4th was “Homeless Persons Remembrance Day,” and promised to ask City Council for more funding to affordable housing programs.
