Last week, the Voice of San Diego (VOSD) hosted “Quest: An Interactive Panel Discussion on Homelessness” at the Alpha Project downtown winter shelter as part of a series launched in December by reporter Kelly Bennett to better understand homelessness in San Diego. Speakers included Marc Stevenson, Director of Project 25; Kelley Knight, DSDP Clean & Safe’s Homeless Outreach Worker; Danny McCray, who runs security and logistics for the Girls Think Tank Transitional Storage Center (also known as the “Waterman Check-in Center”); Sergeant Rick Schnell of the San Diego Police Department’s Homeless Outreach Team; and Kimberly Becker, a formerly homeless individual now living in Catholic Charities’ Independent Living Program, who shared her story of using day center and shelter services in the downtown area.
For more details on the discussion and photos of the evening, read VOSD’s report. And for those wanting to get involved in the discussion, VOSD is encouraging people to post questions for panelists here.
Prior to the event, VOSD rallied a group of volunteers to serve dinner at the tent – volunteers and donations are always needed at the winter shelter. Visit www.alphaproject.org to learn how you can help.
Future coverage in this reporting series will be focused on analyzing key homelessness funding sources, evaluating housing and services programs for chronically homeless, and assessing the effect of technology on homelessness. We will watch for these stories and more in the months to come!
